How to search for biomarkers

This guide will take approximately 3 minutes to complete.

In this guide you will learn:

  • How to search for biomarkers of a disease of interest in Intelligent Search
  • How to refine your search to a specific context by using keywords

Step 1: Use Intelligent Search to look for biomarkers

To explore biomarkers of a disease of interest, use the Intelligent Search on the Causaly home page (Figure 1).

Figure 1. The Intelligent Search on the Causaly homepage

Begin your search by typing the name or abbreviation of a specific disease of interest in the input box and select the concept of interest. The system will then propose a list of relevant search topics related to the chosen concept. Select the 'biomarkers of..' option to look for biomarkers for a disease of interest, such as “Biomarkers of hypertensive disease” (Intelligent Search link) (Figure 2).

Figure 2: Select “Biomarkers of hypertensive disease” from the list of search topics to view the results.

Results will be displayed in an interactive dendrogram view (Figure 3). Before exploring the dendrogram, examine the preselected filters on the left of your screen that Causaly has included by default to display as biomarkers.

TIP! You can change the filters, based on what you consider as a biomarker. For example, you can select “receptors” and/or deselect “hormones” under the Chemicals & Drugs category.

Step 2: Refine your search to a specific context by using keywords

In the Intelligent Search box, you can add additional terms to refine your results to a specific context. For example, to look for biomarkers of disease regression in the context of a specific disease , such as hypertensive disease, type “disease regression” (Figure 4).

Figure 4: Explore biomarkers of disease regression in hypertensive disease.

TIP!

  • By using other keywords such as “treatment response” or “survival”, you can find biomarkers related to different aspects of a specific disease.
  • To refine for a subpopulation of interest, such as diabetic patients, you can type additional search terms in the input box.

You can further refine this search by using additional filters on the left of your screen. Filters include the publication type, year of publication, article section, data source, journal, and journal rank (SJR). To explore how you can best use the different filters, click here.
