The ATC Filter

The  Anatomical Therapeutic Classification system or “ATC'' filter is a drug classification system that classifies the active ingredients of drugs according to the organ or system on which they act . It can be used to refine your search results to active substances that act on a specific organ or system.

Users can choose from the following ATC options to refine their search (Figure 1).

Use Case 1:  Nervous System Drugs that Treat ALS

To explore this use case in Causaly, use the Intelligent Search module to search for treatments of ALS (Figure 2).

Figure 2. Use Intelligent Search to investigate treatments of ALS

In the results page, the pre-selected filters of the proposed search will include pharmacological substances that treat ALS under the Chemicals & Drugs category below the UMLS filters, as well as all ATC subcategories.

To narrow the search to only display nervous system drugs, deselect Chemicals & Drugs and “All ATC”, and keep only the therapeutic classification of interest as selected, in this case, Nervous system drugs(Figure 3).

The exact search result can be found here

Figure 3. Selecting the Nervous system drugs below the All ATC category allows for further refinement toward a specific organ drug classification of interest.

The dendrogram view will now only display articles that examine nervous system drugs that treat ALS (Figure 4).
